What to know Before hiring someone that offers Professional Headlight Restoration

Not all headlight restoration is performed the same way. Before hiring someone, don’t be afraid to ask a few questions about their process. A professional should be able to clearly explain what they do and why.

1. Are You Using a Headlight Restoration Kit?

Ask whether they are using a pre-packaged restoration kit or performing a multi-stage restoration process. There can be a significant difference in the preparation, products, and final result.

2. What Is Your Sanding Process for headlight repair and restoration?

Ask: “Do you sand the headlights first? What grits do you use?”

Proper surface preparation is one of the most important parts of restoring a severely oxidized headlight. If the oxidation and damaged surface aren't properly removed, the new coating won't have the ideal surface to bond to.

3. How Do You Remove the Oxidation?

Ask what they use to deal with the existing oxidation and degraded material.

Don't be afraid to ask what each step of the process actually does. A professional should be able to explain their process rather than simply saying, “That's just how we do it.” When it comes to headlight lense repair and restoration, they should know how to explain their process exactly

4. What Type of Clear Coat Do You Use?

This is an important question. Ask specifically what product they use to protect the restored lens.

You may hear terms like wipe on clear coat, headlight coating, UV coating, or acrylic coating. These products are not necessarily the same thing, and the type of coating used can make a difference in the longevity of the restoration. A wipe on clear can can refer to an actual wipe, which will degrade more easily over time, and doesn't hold up in harsh wether conditions. They can also be refering to "wipe on" as a method. Some clear coats may come from a vile which are much higher quality and longer lasting, but are also required to be "wiped on"

5. What Does Your Complete Process Look Like?

Have them walk you through the entire process from beginning to end.

Do they properly sand the lens? Do they remove the damaged surface? Do they polish it when necessary? What coating is applied afterward?

A professional should have a clear, repeatable process—not just a quick fix.

The Bottom Line: Don't be afraid to ask questions. You're paying for a professional service, and you have every right to understand what is being done to your vehicle.
